Sollievo Brings “Relief” to Alzheimer's Caregivers
New Service Provides In-Home Consultation, 24/7 Hotline and
Community Resources to Ease Burden of Caregiving
INDIANAPOLIS, IN: March 13, 2008 – Alzheimer’s Care Group
announced today the launch of a caregiver resource network called, “Sollievo.”
Sollievo, which means “relief” in Italian, collaborates with
community resources to provide solutions and relief to family
members caring for aging parents, aunts, and uncles who have been
diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. The service extends in-home
consultation, education and strategies, a 24/7 LIVE hotline, and
community resources to ease the burden of caregiving.
Alzheimer’s disease affects one in four persons in our community.
Over 30,000 family members and friends care for more than 19,000
people in our community who suffer from Alzheimer’s and related
dementias. Most of these family caregivers are adult children, aged
45-55 years old, working at least part time.
Sollievo’s reach to family caregivers in metro Indianapolis who
are caring for their aging parents at home is based on eldercare
research affirming that an educated family caregiver keeps an aging
parent out of long term care facilities one and one-half years
longer than an uneducated caregiver, an estimated savings of ninety
thousand dollars. In addition to that financial relief, Sollievo
hopes to provide strategies to ease the burden on the local
workforce now faced with the estimated 13% of caregivers who have
had to reduce their employment hours or who have been faced with the
inability to accept promotions or assignments based on their need to
care for an aging parent.
